What is Kratom?

Kratom, scientifically known as Mitragyna speciosa, is a species of plant native to the tropical regions of Southeast Asia. It belongs to the blush family (Rubiaceae). Kratom is an evergreen tree that can reach a height of up to 30 meters. The leaves of the kratom tree contain various active chemical compounds, including alkaloids such as mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine. These alkaloids are responsible for kratom's potential stimulant, sedative, and pain-relieving properties. In Southeast Asia, kratom has traditionally been used by local people by chewing the leaves or making tea from them. In recent years kratom has also become popular internationally as a herbal supplement and there are various forms such as kratom powder, capsules and extracts that are consumed by people all over the world.

How does kratom work?

The effects of kratom can vary depending on the strain, dosage, and individual response. In general, kratom is valued for its stimulating, sedative, and pain-relieving properties. Here are some commonly reported effects:

  1. Stimulant: Low to medium doses of kratom can produce a stimulating effect similar to that of coffee or tea. It can promote energy, alertness and concentration, elevate mood and increase general well-being.

  2. Calming/Relaxing: At higher dosages, kratom can have a sedative effect. It can make one feel relaxed and calm, reduce stress and anxiety, and promote general relaxation. Some people also use kratom to help them sleep better.

  3. Pain Relieving: Kratom also has pain relieving properties and is used by some people to relieve chronic pain. It can help with both acute and long-term pain, however, it is important to carefully monitor the dosage and consult a doctor.

It is important to note that the effects of kratom can vary from person to person and that desired effects can also depend on the strain, quality of kratom, and individual tolerance. Additionally, in higher doses, kratom can have a sedative effect and potentially cause unwanted side effects. It is advisable to consume kratom responsibly and with caution.
